GW Gets Green Light for Projects
DC Zoning Commission Approves Construction
By Jane Lingo
Three University building projects are in line for
completion of the zoning approval process. The buildings already have
been fully approved in a vote by the DC Zoning Commission.
The projects include the addition to Funger Hall to
provide expanded space for the School of Business and Public Management;
the enclosure of two terraces to expand studio space for painting and
sculpture students at the Smith Hall of Art; and the townhouse group
to provide residences for students with shared academic interests, described
by University planners as affinity housing. Final written
orders approving these projects are expected in February.
A large residence hall intended to house 710 students
and proposed for Square 43, bounded by 23rd and 24th streets and G street
and Virginia avenue was generally approved by the Zoning Commission
on Jan. 14. One aspect of the buildings design, however, will
require further review an enclosed courtyard. Thus, the University
must apply for a variance, which would be considered by the Zoning Commission
after a public hearing. The hearing requires a 45-day period of announcement,
which will impact the timing of final approval.
The hearing on the Elliott School of International
Affairs project at 1957 E St. was concluded Jan. 17. However, further
written materials are due to be filed with the Zoning Commission in
the next two weeks. The Zoning Commission must make a final decision
about including the building as part of the Campus Plan at a regularly
scheduled meeting.
