Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements

Azim Eskandarian, professor of engineering and applied science, chaired the session on collision detection/avoidance at the 11th International IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems in Beijing. Eskandarian also was the invited speaker at the “Special Session in Electronic Speed Enforcement/Control” at the 15th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems in New York, and spoke about “Passive and Active Vehicle Safety Research” at the California Center for Innovative Transportation at the University of California, Berkeley.

Rabbi Max Ticktin, assistant professor of Hebrew, received Hillel’s 85th Anniversary Alumni Award at the organization’s Professional Staff Conference in Baltimore in December.

Appointments

Erin Harpine has been named coordinator of victims services and educational initiatives for the University Police Department. As coordinator, Harpine will develop educational initiatives, organize victim support services, and further develop crime prevention, safety education, and awareness programs for GW.

Megan Keller, a graduate student in GW’s Museum Studies Program, has been named veterans services coordinator. Keller will work with staff in the University’s Office of Student and Academic Support Services to assist GW student veterans and raise awareness of student veteran issues and needs.

Publications

Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, wrote a chapter and appendix for the book Japanese Masters of the Brush: Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran, which recently won The Art Book editorial board and the Association of Art Historians’ 2008 Book Award.

Robert M. Entman, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro professor of media and public affairs and international affairs, and Kimberly A. Gross, associate professor of media and public affairs, published “Race to Judgment: Stereotyping Media and Criminal Defendants” in Law and Contemporary Problems.

Amitai Etzioni, University Professor and professor of international affairs, has published “Toward a Progressive Approach to Homeland Security” in Democracy and Security, “Reconstruction: A Damaging Fantasy?” in Military Review, “Die Türkei—Nagelprobe für den Westen” in Internationale Politik und Gesselschaft, and “Dit is het geode moment voor vrede met Iran” in NRC Handelsblad.

Kelly Pemberton, assistant professor of religion and women’s studies, co-edited “Shared Idioms, Sacred Symbols and the Articulation of Identities in South Asia” with Michael Nijhawan of York University. The volume was published by Routledge in December.
