Mobile News Center, RSS Feeds Now Available at GWNewsCenter.org

By Julia Parmley

Two new initiatives on the GWNewsCenter.org Web site will enable the University community and members of the media to receive their news faster. The Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed and the Mobile News Center will make University news even more accessible. Both initiatives are a combined effort of the Office of University Relations and Information Systems and Services.

RSS feeds, which require the use of an RSS reader and registration of the GW News Center feed, provide a condensed format for distributing Web content and University news. Tracy Schario, director of media relations, says the feeds are a non-invasive tool to keep readers and members of the media updated.

“When we post press releases, any journalist who subscribes to our RSS feed is immediately notified—it’s a self-selective distributive channel,” says Schario. “The greatest value proposition is that you do not have the risk of spamming people by sending out mass e-mails. RSS really allows users to be in control of the content they receive.”

The Mobile News Center provides information from the GW News Center to mobile phones and smartphones. Users add a bookmark, www.gwnewscenter.org, to their mobile device and can then access the site at anytime. Rachel Watson, Web editor for the Office of University Relations, says the convenience of the application will increase the efficiency and overall Web experience for users.

“Today, more and more people are using the Web on their mobile devices, and some Web sites aren’t designed to accommodate their requests,” says Watson. “Since GW News Center has gone mobile, it has become more versatile and accessible.”

“We are pleased to offer our readers these new methods for receiving GW news and information,” says Chris M. Kormis, assistant vice president for university relations. “Since we launched the GW News Center in 2002, we have continually looked for ways to use the technology available to us to keep our community and the media informed. With more than 8.5 million visits last year, the GW News Center has become the University’s daily news source.”
