Channing Tops 2006 President’s Night Bill

Tony-Award winner Carol Channing will perform as the featured guest at The George Washington University’s 2006 President’s Night performance Feb. 9 in Lisner Auditorium.

Channing burst forth on the Broadway scene following the smashing success of her role as Lorelei in 1950s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Since that performance she has been nominated for a Tony Award for every Broadway production in which she has appeared. The1964 musical Hello, Dolly!, won 10 Tony awards, including Channing’s for best actress in a comedy for her role as Dolly. In 1995 Channing received the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award. She also has earned 10 gold albums, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe award, a Best Nightclub Act of the Year Award, and Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year. Her original cast album of Hello, Dolly!, is the all-time best seller in its field, knocking the Beatles off the charts when it was released in 1964. She has appeared in several movies, most notably in the 1967 production Thoroughly Modern Millie.

President’s Night is an annual event for members of The George Washington University donor societies and the University’s special friends in the District. Artists who have performed at this event include Paul Anka, Dave Brubeck, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Arlo Guthrie, and Victor Borge.
