Publications

Shmuel Ben-Gad, librarian at Gelman Library, reviewed the book God, Israel, and Shiloh by David Rubin in the September/October 2007 newsletter of the Association of Jewish Libraries.

Peter Caws, University Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Human Sciences, gave a University lecture at GW on Nov. 15, 2006, in the Marvin Center’s Grand Ballroom. The text of the lecture, Reason and Hope: Knowledge, Belief, and the Future of Humanity, has been published by the River Horse Press, along with his companion editorial, “After the Polls: Back to the Future.” To request a complimentary copy, e-mail jsieck@gwu.edu or call (202) 994-8690.

Mark Feldstein, associate professor of media and public affairs, published two peer-reviewed articles: “Dummies and Ventriloquists: Models of How Sources Set the Investigative Agenda” in the fall 2007 issue of Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism and “Media Coverage and a Federal Grand Jury: Publication of the Secret Watergate Transcripts (1973)” in the spring 2007 issue of American Journalism.

Jodi I. Kanter, assistant professor of theatre, published Performing Loss: Rebuilding Community Through Theatre and Writing. The book explores how communities can use performance to respond to shared experiences of grief.

Appointments

P.B. Garrett, GW’s assistant vice president for academic technology, has been named the University’s deputy chief information officer for academic technology.

Acknowledgments

Steven Livingston, professor of media and public affairs and of international affairs, joined former CBS news anchor Dan Rather and former ABC News executive producer Tom Yellin for a discussion of the U.S. news media’s coverage of the war in Iraq on Nov. 27. The discussion was hosted by The Paley Center for Media in New York City and moderated by Frank Rich of The New York Times.

Toni Marsh, visiting assistant professor in the College of Professional Studies, was recognized for her volunteer efforts with the National Capital Area Paralegal Association at its Annual Meeting of the Members and Awards Dinner on Nov. 5 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

GW’s Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management (OPSEM) has been awarded the Business and Industry Preparedness Award from the International Association of Emergency Managers for its Emergency Preparedness Exercise Program.

Lawrence Singleton, associate professor of accountancy, presented “Accounting Treasure Hunt for Investor Relations” at the National Investor Relations Institute 2007 Southwest Regional Conference on Aug. 15 in Austin, Texas. He also participated in the Human Capital Analytics Symposium, a roundtable symposium that focused on future trends in human capital measurement. The invitation-only symposium was sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), in conjunction with the SHRM Foundation on Oct. 2, in Washington, D.C.
