Wood Named University Professor

Bernard Wood became GW’s newest University Professor on Oct. 13.

Bernard Wood, GW’s Henry R. Luce Professor of Human Origins, has been named University
Professor of Human Origins. The appointment recognizes his nationally and internationally renowned research and scholarship in paleoanthropology.

“Bernard Wood’s research in the field of paleoanthropology has been nothing short of extraordinary,” says President Stephen Joel
Trachtenberg. “His efforts have had a major impact in the study of human evolution, and it is our honor to have GW serve as his home base where our students directly benefit from his teaching on a daily basis. As a University Professor, he can now reach out to even larger audiences as he mentors tomorrow's leaders in this important field of study.”

The position of University Professor was created in 1980 to bring scholars of major national and international stature to the University. Wood is the eighth GW University Professor, joining Peter Caws, Amitai Etzioni, Seyyed Nasr, Jim Rosenau, Harry Harding, Stephen Saltzberg, and Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, who will become a University Professor of Public Service in 2007 when he concludes his almost 20-year-long tenure as president.
