GW CIO David Swartz Named University Vice President

David Swartz, GW’S chief information officer since 1999, was named vice president responsible for GW’s Information Systems and Services (ISS). In addition he will take on expanded responsibilities managing new areas such as student technology services and residential networking (ResNet).

“Dave helped identify the University’s technology needsand outlined a strategy to create an enhanced IT environment for the GW community,” said GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg. “Under his leadership, and with the direction of the Board of Trustees and senior management, our entiretechnology team has helped make GW a better place to teach, work, and learn.”

During the past six years, Swartz helped to consolidate a disparate University information technology (IT) infrastructure into an integrated organization with 260 employees and a $40 million budget. During Swartz’s tenure, GW has moved to replace the University’s mainframe applications with powerful servers supporting Web-based applications that simplify access and ease of use. Such efforts landed Swartz and GW on the cover of the July 8 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, and he was recently named to the prestigious “Premier Top 100 IT Professionals” list created by Computerworld.
