Colonials Round-Up

Soccer’s Warner, Kain Earn Preseason Honors

Junior Kim Warner received an Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team selection, and freshman center midfielder Ina Kain was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Rookie team.

Warner, the 2001 team MVP, was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team and to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team last season. She led the Colonials in goals scored (eight), assists (four), points (20), shots (45), and game winning goals (three). Warner’s 20 points ranked her third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring and her nine points during conference play ranked her 10th in conference scoring. This season, Warner will lead the team of 14 returning players and five outstanding freshmen.

Kain was a member of the U-15 Olympic Development Program National Team in 1999. She also was a member of the regional team and participated in the US National All-Star Team International Competition (Texas, 2000). She was a standout player for the Southern California Blues Soccer Club, helping them to capture one US National Championship (Florida, 2000), back-to-back US Western Regional Championships (2001 and 2000), back-to-back Cal-South State Championships (2001 and 2000) and several other regional titles.

The team kicks off its season at Mt. Vernon against Wagner Sept. 6 at 4 pm.

Preseason Conference Kudos for Three Colonials
Atlantic 10 men’s soccer coaches selected three Colonials to the 2002 Preseason Men’s Soccer All-Conference team.

Midfielder Michael Goldman earned his honors coming off of a strong junior year with the Colonials. Goldman scored two goals and notched seven assists. Goldman ranks eighth in GW history in career assists entering the 2002 season.

High school All-American Steve Brown and Florida All-State team member forward Frank Ambrosio received 2002 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Rookie team selections.

Brown was a four-year starter for North Rockland High School in Thiells, NY, leading the team in scoring two of his four seasons and garnering All-League recognition each year.

Ambrosio scored 106 career goals, adding 83 assists in his four-year career as a starter for Bishop Moore High School.

GW begins its 2002 regular season versus cross-town rival Georgetown in the DC Classic, on Friday, August 30, in a noon match.

GW Bouyed by Boyle
Director of GW rowing and women’s varsity coach Steve Peterson named men’s novice rowing coach Matt Boyle the new head coach for men’s rowing, replacing Gene Kininmonth.

Boyle, who graduated from GW in 2000, spent the past two years coaching the Colonials men’s novice crew. Last season he guided the novice crew to one of its most successful seasons, advancing to the grand finals of both the San Diego Crew Classic and the Dad Vails, capturing the Atlantic 10 Invitational title.

Rowing Adds Olympic Flare
Former Olympian Helen Betancourt will join The George Washington University rowing staff as the assistant coach for women’s crew and will be responsible for coaching the novice team.

A 1998 graduate of Brown University, Betancourt comes to GW after serving as an assistant coach at Episcopal Academy in Merion, PA. Prior to that, she was the assistant women’s rowing coach at San Diego State University.

Betancourt was an alternate on the US Rowing team in the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, and represented the United States at the World Championships in Croatia, Canada, Germany, and France.
