Get Thee to a Library
Noted Shakespearean scholar and GW Professor
of English Gail Kern Paster has been named director of the Folger Shakespeare
Library, the fifth in the librarys 70-year history. Pasters
appointment, effective July 1, was announced in March by the Trustees
of Amherst College, who administer the Folger under the will of the
librarys founder, Henry Clay Folger. She succeeds Werner Gundersheimer.
Hirshon Presents Cohen Lectureship
The Law School will host Robert E. Hirshon, president
of the American Bar Association (ABA), as part of the 22nd annual Manuel
F. Cohen Memorial Lecture series, April 2. The topic of discussion is
Take Back The Future: A Guide To Meeting The Challenges Of Legal
Practice.
Hirshon is currently serving a one-year term as president of the ABA.
He has a substantial practice in state and federal courts at the Portland,
ME, law firm of Drummond, Woodsum, and MacMahon, where he represents
a broad base of clients including corporations, individuals, insurance
companies, and banks.
The Manuel F. Cohen Memorial Lecture, created by the friends and colleagues
of Cohen, was established at the Law School in 1979. This endowed lecture
series serves as a living memorial to Cohen, a leader in the field of
securities law, a dedicated public servant, former chairman of the Securities
and Exchange Commission, legal scholar, and a teacher at the Law School
for nearly two decades.
HRS Launches Jobs Web Site
Human Resource Services has unveiled a new section
of its Web site for staff employment opportunities. Prospective employees
now can gather the following information about GW jobs: job description,
qualifications, grade, and position type. Users also can apply for positions
online by submitting their resumes directly to an HRS E-mail account.
Current GW employees who are interested in a different position should
continue to complete an employee transfer application, which can be
downloaded online. HRS can be found online at www.gwu.edu/~hrs.
EEOC Counsel to Keynote April 18 Meeting
Peggy Mastroianni, associate legal counsel of
the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), will speak at the
District of Columbia Business Leadership Networks (DCBLN) quarterly
business meeting April 18 at 9:30 am in Marvin Center 309. Mastroianni
will address Americans with Disabilities Act-related case law; reasonable
accommodations for confidentiality, record keeping, and alternatives
to requests; cognitive disabilities; guidance on return to work
issues facing existing employees; and retention. The DCBLN strives to
increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities by working
with businesses, governmental organizations, and community services
agencies in supportive and productive partnerships. GW has served as
the lead employer for the DCBLN since September 2001.
Four Alumni to be Honored for Service
The GW Alumni Association honored four graduates
with the Alumni Service Award at a March 26th ceremony. The Alumni
Service Award was created to recognize volunteer contributions by alumni
to the University and their communities. Each year, several alumni
are selected in honor of their service. The 2002 winners are: David
K. Moore (SBPM, MBA 80), Raymond J. Oglethorpe (SBPM, MBA 69),
Robert L. Tull (SBPM, BA 49), and Mary C. Young (GSEHD, BS 65).
Vertes Receives Prestigious Hungarian Science Award
The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), the
highest-level scientific institution in Hungary, has awarded Akos Vertes,
professor of chemistry, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The
title is considered beyond the level of the PhD, and currently only
320 chemists hold the honor. At the same time, he was admitted as a
member of the General Assembly of the HAS.
