Helping Staff in Times of Need

For GW employees struggling with personal and professional problems assistance is only a phone call away. For two decades, the University’s Faculty/
Employee Assistance Program has been helping GW community members cope with a range of issues, including marriage and family problems, substance abuse, grief, and illness.

The program has offered counseling, referrals, and services to more than 7,000 employees. “One of the most important aspects of the program is that it’s completely confidential,” says Lee Smith, who has directed the Faculty Employee Assistance Program since it was established in 1987.

All employees need to do is call and make an appointment. Smith offers short-term counseling herself. She can also provide referrals to psychiatrists, psychologists, rehabilitation centers, and other resources throughout the metropolitan area. “I never refer people to someone I don’t know,” says Smith, who has years of experience in the D.C. region.

Smith stresses that problems don’t have to be work related to take advantage of the Faculty/Employee Assistance Program, and urges staff to call as soon as possible rather than letting problems fester. To arrange an appointment, call (202) 676-2002. The Faculty/ Employee Assistance Program office is located at 2112 F St., NW.
