Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff

Acknowledgements:

Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese and Columbian Professor, CCAS, presented the lecture, “The Scholarly Arts of China,” to the faculty and graduate students of Princeton University’s East Asian Studies Program, March 15.

Stuart Umpleby, professor of management, GWSB, presented the paper, “Agenda Setting and Improvement Monitoring in a University Department” at the 12th Annual International Deming Research Seminar at Fordham University in New York City. The paper was co-authored with Igor Dubina, visiting professor from Barnaul, Russia, during the 2004–05 academic year. Umpleby also published “Intellektuelle Bewegungen Schaffen und Foerdern,” (Creating and Promoting Intellectual Movements) in Lernende Organization (Learning Organization).

Appointments:

Refik Soyer, professor of decision sciences, GWSB, has been appointed as a section editor of The John Wiley & Sons’ Encyclopedia of Statistics in Quality and Reliability. Soyer also co-authored, with Kadir Tanyeri, “Bayesian Portfolio Selection with Multivariate Random Variance Models” in the European Journal of Operational Research.

Awards:

James Bailey, professor of social and organizational theory, GWSB, was named one of the top 10 executive leadership educators worldwide, based on a survey conducted annually by the International Council for Executive Leadership Development. Bailey’s nomination emphasized “dynamic presentation skills that incorporate theory and applied aspects” and “promotion of research on executive education.”

Publications:

Jennifer M. Brinkerhoff, associate professor of public administration, international affairs, and international business, CCAS and ESIA, published “Digital Diasporas and Conflict Prevention: The Case of Somalinet.com,” in the Review of International Studies, v. 32 (January 2006), pp. 25–47. Brinkerhoff and Derick Brinkerhoff, affiliate faculty, SPPPA, published “Preparing People for International Public Service in a Changed World: The Continued Relevance of the MPA” in PA Times (American Society of Public Administration), March 2006.

Amitai Etzioni, University Professor, CCAS, recently published “Religion and the State: Why Moderate Religious Teachings Should be Promoted,” in Harvard International Review, Spring 2006; “Leveraging Islam,” in The National Interest, n. 83; Public Intellectuals: An Endangered Species?, edited by Etzioni and Alyssa Bowditch. (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, Inc. 2006); and “Leaving Race Behind: Our Growing Hispanic Population Creates a Golden Opportunity,” The American Scholar, Spring 2006.

William Frawley, dean and professor of anthropology and psychology, CCAS, edited (with assistance from GW undergraduates, Sarah Mills, Erin Eschenroeder, and Thao Nguyen) The Expression of Modality, by Mouton deGruyter. Frawley also published the article “Expanding the Expectations for International Educational Experiences: Toward Global Competencies,” in Innovations in International Education, pp. 36–48.

Carol Hoare, professor of human development and human resource development, GSEHD, edited Handbook of Adult Development and Learning (Oxford University Press, 2006)

Sanjay Jain, assistant professor of decision sciences, GWSB, co-authored, with Charles R. McLean of the National Institute of Standards and Technology — a federal agency within US Department of Commerce — the article “An Integrating Framework for Modeling and Simulation for Incident Management ,” in the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Ralph Mueller, chair, Department of Educational Leadership, professor of educational research and public policy and public administration, GSEHD, co-edited with Gregory R. Hancock of the University of Maryland, the book Structural Equation Modeling: A Second Course, part of a series by The American Educational Research Association called “Quantitative Methods in Education and the Behavioral Sciences: Issues, Research, and Teaching.”

Fernando Robles, professor of international business and international affairs, GWSB, co-authored the article, with Syed Akhter, titled “Leveraging Internal Competency and Managing Environmental Uncertainty: Propensity to Collaborate in International Markets” in the International Marketing Review, v. 23, n.1.
