Nine DC Students Receive 2006 Trachtenberg Scholarships

Nine seniors from the District of Columbia’s public school system joined a select group March 29, as GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and other representatives of The George Washington University presented them with the 17th annual Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarships. The full, four-year scholarships each are worth approximately $200,000. This year’s recipients come from Ballou Senior High School, Banneker High School, Bell Multicultural High School, Eastern High School, School Without Walls, Roosevelt High School, and Wilson High School.

Darcy Jones-Duberrry, a senior from Ballou Senior High School who plans to major in sports management, was literally knocked off his feet and left speechless when he realized he was the recipient of the scholarship.

“Really surprised, I wasn’t expecting it,” he said once he regained his footing. “Without this, I wouldn’t be able to go to GW.”

Since its inception in 1989 as the GW Presidential 21st Century Scholars program, the Stephen Joel Trachtenberg Scholarship program has provided 84 of the District’s most promising students full, four-year scholarships. The scholarship was re-named for President Trachtenberg by the GW Board of Trustees in 1998 to celebrate his 10th anniversary as GW president.

“I’m very happy to be going to college and getting a free education,” said Leticia Tientcheu, a senior from Roosevelt Senior High School. Tientcheu spent several years in Senegal before coming to the United States and is one of seven children.
“College wasn’t an option when I first came to the United States; I thought this wasn’t going to happen.”

The scholarships, along with other grants and work-study programs, have made GW the nation’s largest single post-secondary contributor of aid to DC Public School students for the last 13 years. GW’s total commitment since the inception of the program is now more than $12 million.
