Freedom of Information Hits New Heights

In an effort to highlight policy debates between secrecy and issues of openness in government, noted conceptual artist Jenny Holzer projected a selection of classified documents onto Gelman Library Nov. 1. These documents, which were obtained by GW’s National Security Archive through the Freedom of Information Act, included content on Iraq and terrorism from 1981 to 2001. Holzer has displayed documents in public spaces around the world.

“Jenny Holzer does for the digital age what a nail and broadsheet used to do, for example, when Martin Luther pounded his theses onto the church door,” said Thomas Blanton, the archive’s director
