Hess Highlights Editorial Cartoonists and Campaigns

School of Media and Public Affairs’ (SMPA) Distinguished Research Professor Stephen Hess, a renowned Washington scholar and senior fellow emeritus at the Brookings Institution, is featured in a two-part editorial on PBS’s The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer entitled “Drawing Fire.” The series highlights how America’s editorial cartoonists are viewing the presidential campaign. Part one aired Sept. 30 with the final piece scheduled for Oct. 29.

“The editorial cartoonists are a fascinating and accurate focus group of Americans,” said Hess. “See what they draw each day and you will better understand where the nation is at.”

“Drawing Fire” is co-produced by Hess and Sandy Northrop, who co-authored Drawn & Quartered (Elliott & Clark, 1996), the 200-year history of America’s editorial cartoons and their impact on political and popular culture. The concept for “Drawing Fire” grew out of their book. Northrop also is the director of this two-part series. She has directed and produced many award-winning documentaries for PBS. Her next documentary, “Vietnam: The Next Generation,” will air on PBS in May 2005.

Hess was recently named a distinguished research professor of media and public affairs at GW. He teaches a course entitled Washington Reporters, examining the domestic press corps in Washington and how it moves news in certain directions. He also plans to conduct research for an upcoming book.

“We are pleased to have an astute Washington observer and scholar of Stephen Hess’ caliber join our faculty,” said Albert L. May, associate professor of media and public affairs, who in his former capacity as SMPA acting director helped bring Hess to GW. “His significant contributions in research will bring recognition to our school and provide challenging new experiences for our students.”

Since 1972, Hess has been a senior fellow in the governance studies program of the Brookings Institution. He has served on the White House staffs of Presidents Eisenhower and Nixon, and has been an advisor to Presidents Ford and Carter. Hess has edited and authored several books including International News & Foreign Correspondents; News & Newsmaking; Presidents & the Presidency; The Presidential Campaign; The Ultimate Insiders: US Senators in the National Media; and Nixon: A Political Portrait. In addition, he wrote “The Hess Report” for USA Today, a weekly column on media coverage, during the 2000 presidential campaign.
