The Ups and Downs of University Life
As the Old University Hospital is Torn Down, Ivory Towers
Continues to Climb
Full-scale demolition of the old hospital is underway and will
continue through early December. The University community is cautioned
to avoid the demolition site to the greatest degree possible. Eye Street
between 22nd and 23rd streets will be closed for brief periods during
the demolition to move equipment and address utility-related issues. The
Eye Street sidewalk on the side of the old hospital between 22nd and 23rd
streets will continue to be closed during the demolition. The sidewalk
directly in front of the old hospital on 23rd Street between Eye Street
and Washington Circle will be closed as needed. Students are cautioned
to observe safety and other signage placed at the entrance and sidewalk.
Truck traffic from Eye Street onto 23rd Street will continue throughout
the course of the demolition process. Students and staff should be aware
of the traffic and cross only at corners and designated crosswalks.
Meanwhile, construction continues on the new apartment-style residence
hall, Ivory Towers. Marked for completion next August, the structure will
hold 728 beds. Other amenities include a bathroom for each bedroom, a
kitchen, a living/dining room, and TV and high-speed Internet connections.
There also will be two levels of below-ground parking, retail and dining
space, and rehearsal rooms.
