GW Exhibition “The George Washington University Community Collects” Featuring works from the collections of patrons of the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery and members of the GW Community. It will run from Oct. 13 through Dec. 10. The gallery, located on the second floor of GW’s Media and Public Affairs Building, is free and open to the public. For more call 994-1525.

GW Lecture Clarice Smith Distinguished Lectures in American Art Painter and printmaker Pat Steir, recipient of the Guggenheim Artist Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, examines the inevitable connections between art and the period in which it is created. 7 pm in Lisner Auditorium. GW Colonials Weekend Elizabeth J. Somers Leadership Awards Luncheon This event honors a Mount Vernon Seminary teacher, a Mount Vernon College professor and an alumna, and is open to all Mount Vernon alumnae. 11:30 am– 1:30 pm. Mount Vernon Campus, Post Hall.

GW $ Colonials Weekend Tour of Hillwood Museum & Gardens Hillwood Museum is one of the premier art collector’s house museums in the United States, featuring Marjorie Merriweather Post’s renowned personal collections of fine and decorative arts, as well as 12 acres of impeccable gardens — a must see. Tickets $10. 2–5 pm (A bus departs the Mount Vernon Campus Visitor’s Entrance Gatehouse at 1:45 pm).

GW Colonials Weekend Colonials Weekend Kick-off Party This event, in honor of the undergraduate Classes of 1994 and 1999, is open to all alumni and is a festive way to begin the reunion weekend. Alumni House (1925 F St.), 7:30–10 pm.

GW Colonials Weekend Cabaret Showcase Join the students of GW’s music and theatre & dance departments, as they perform some classic old favorites and some exciting new ones from the Broadway Musical Theatre Songbook. These numbers from the creative minds of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kandor & Ebb, Bock & Harnick, Stephen Sondheim, and many others, take us on a walking tour of the Broadway musical over the past century. GW $ Performance Washington Performing Arts Society presents Gajamukha. Indian musicians and dancers present this stunning production, which revolves around the elephant-faced Hindu deity, Gajamukha. Indian music, dance and theater combine in this presentation of the divine manifestations of Gajamukha, with exquisite musical compositions in Sanskrit and Tamil. 8 pm at Lisner Auditorium. $ Lecture “A Conversation on War” with James Carroll, Alexsandar Hemon, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. Carroll, author of the National Book Award-winning memoir An American Requiem, is joined by Hemon, the author of The Question of Bruno, and Wakatsuki Houston, who co-authored Farewell to Manzanar about her family’s experience during and after the World War II internment of Japanese Americans, in a discussion about war. 8 pm, $15. GW Colonials Weekend Colonials Weekend Welcome President Trachtenberg and Ambassador Edward “Skip” Gnehm will keynote the official opening of Colonials Weekend. Lisner Auditorium (730 21st St.), 10–11:15 am.

GW Colonials Weekend Campus Walking Tours Current students lead these hour-long walking tours. Foggy Bottom tours depart from the Visitors Center (801 22nd St.) 11 am, 2 pm; Mount Vernon tours depart from the clock tower by the tennis courts 12:45 pm, 3:45 pm.

GW Colonials Weekend Alumni Soccer Game and Reception Battle of the alumni on the soccer field. Have these Colonial alumni lost their game or gotten better with age? Find out at the alumni soccer game. Following the game will be a reception for soccer alumni, current soccer players, parents and families. Mount Vernon Athletic Field, 11 am–1 pm. GW Colonials Weekend Colonials Village Meet up with fellow alumni, parents and students at Colonials Village on Kogan Plaza. Reunite with classmates and club members as you visit the many University and student organization hospitality tents. Read old copies of The GW Hatchet. Check out the yearbook from your class. Entertainment provided and food available for purchase all day. Kogan Plaza & H Street (between 21st and 22nd streets), noon–4 pm. In case of rain, Colonials Village will be held in the Marvin Center, 3rd Floor Grand Ballroom.

GW Colonials Weekend Colonial Lecture Series Featuring the Annual Kayser Lecture The 2004 Colonial Lecture Series offers a broad range of timely topics, including politics, aging and art, to engage alumni, parents and students. Lecture 1: Second Annual Elmer Louis Kayser Lecture in History: “What Can History Tell Us about the Election of 2004” presented by Edward Berkowitz, professor of history. 1–1:50 pm. GW $ Colonials Weekend La Fiestasa Alumni House (1925 F St.), 9 pm–1 am. Celebrate the finale to Hispanic Heritage Month with a traditional Latin extravaganza complete with music, dancing and appetizers. Experience the Latin culture at GW and mingle with the current and past members of the Organization of Latino American Students. Tickets $5 per person (payable at the door).
