Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff


Acknowledgements:
Douglas Frechtling, professor of tourism studies, SBPM, addressed the World Tourism Organization’s executive council on June 4 in Madrid, Spain. He discussed destination crisis management in Washington, DC.

Tyra Hilliard, assistant professor of tourism studies, SBPM, presented “Walk the Walk: Ethical Issues for Meeting Professionals,” an interactive session about professional ethics, to members of the Georgia chapter of Meeting Professionals International in Atlanta, GA.

Malinee Peris, adjunct associate professor of music, CCAS, released her sixth recording “From Portugal to Brazil,” (Brioso Recordings), featuring music for solo piano by Villa-Lobos, Scixas, Guarneri and others. The music explores musical links between the two countries and blends classical, modernist and folkloric styles.

Christina Puchalski, director of GWish, was featured in the article “Exploring the Spirit of Healing” published in the summer issue of Cure Magazine.

Liesl Riddle, assistant professor of international business, SBPM, presented “The Economic Reconstruction of Iraq: Opportunities and Obstacles” to the International Affairs Enhancement Program at Howard University’s Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center. She also presented “Stimulating Exports and Investments through Public- and Private-Sector Cooperation” to the US Department of State’s International Visitor Program at the Meridian Center.

Lawrence Singleton, associate professor of accountancy, SBPM, addressed members of the Public Relations Society of America on Aug. 21 in New York. His presentation focused on helping corporate communicators effectively communicate with Wall Street, the press, investors and other interested parties.

Mark Starik, associate professor of strategic management and public policy, SBPM, presented “Sustainable Enterprise Curricula at George Washington University,” focusing on the sustainability aspects of programs and courses both within and outside of SBPM at the World Resources Institute Business Environment Learning and Leadership conference, “Ecosystems and Environment: Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Business,” at Florida Atlantic University.

Stuart Umpleby, professor of management science, SBPM, presented a lecture, “Three Suggestions for Expanding the Philosophy of Science,” at the Institute of Philosophy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia, Bulgaria, on June 27. 

Publications:
Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese, wrote “Soul and Reason in Literary Criticism: Deconstructing the Deconstructionists,” published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society, v. 122, n. 4, pp. 828–835.

Joseph Gastwirth, professor of statistics and of economics, CCAS, Mohammad Reza Modarres-Hakimi, associate professor of statistics, CCAS, and Tapan Nayak, professor of statistics, CCAS, co-wrote “Estimation of Upper Quantiles and Model Uncertainty,” published in Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, v. 39, pp. 529–554. Gastwirth and Zhaohai Li, associate professor of statistics, CCAS, co-wrote, with collaborators at the National Institutes of Health, “Statistical Properties of Teng and Risch’s Sibship Type Tests for Detecting an Association between Disease and a Candidate Allele,” published in Human Heridity, v. 53, pp. 114–129. Gastwirth also wrote “Issues Arising in Using Samples as Evidence in Trademark Cases,” published in Journal of Econometrics, v. 113, pp. 69–82.

Caren Goldberg, assistant professor of management science, SBPM, co-authored with Lynn Shore (Georgia State University) and Jeanette Cleveland (Penn State University) the article, “Work Attitudes and Decisions as a Function of Manager Age and Employee Age” in the Journal of Applied Psychology, v. 88, pp. 529–537. Goldberg also published “Applicant Reactions to the Employment Interview: A Look at Demographic Similarity and Social Identity Theory,” in the Journal of Business Research, v. 56, n. 8, pp. 561–571.

Jennifer Nutefall, instruction coordinator, Gelman Library, published “Information Literacy: Developing Parternships Across Library Types” in Research Strategies, v. 18, pp. 311–318.

Cindy Rohrbeck, associate professor of psychology, CCAS, published “Peer-Assisted Learning Interventions With Elementary School Students: A Meta-Analytic Review” in the Journal of Educational Psychology, v. 95, pp. 240–257, June 2003.
