Kalb Report Returns with Guest Jim Lehrer
The award-winning public affairs series The Kalb Report returns
to the National Press Club for its 40th show Sept. 20 featuring guest
Jim Lehrer, executive editor and anchor of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.
Each forum of the 200405 season is hosted by distinguished journalist/scholar
Marvin Kalb.
For the second consecutive year The Kalb Report received a grant
from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation to produce four
forums during the 200405 academic year, two shows this fall and
two more in the spring. The foundation was established in 1982 by Edith
Kinney Gaylord for charitable, scientific and educational purposes, including
the improvement of the quality of the practice of journalism among various
media. This support includes funding for creative projects and research
that promotes excellence in journalism and instills and encourages high
ethical standards in journalism.
GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg initiated the series in 1994, when
Kalb served as a visiting professor at the University. Since that time,
the partnership has produced 39 Kalb Report forums in the main
ballroom of the National Press Club with audiences comprising GW students
and professionals. This highly acclaimed public affairs series is produced
by GW Vice President for Communications Michael Freedman, and is a public
affairs partnership between GW, The National Press Club, The Joan Shorenstein
Center on The Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University
and News Talk 630 WMAL Radio. The show explores topics ranging from Ethics
in Journalism to Covering the Private Lives of Public Officials,
and has featured guests such as Walter Cronkite, former Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright, Dan Rather, Sen. Hillary Clinton (DNY), Secretary
of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Bob
Schieffer, New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. and
Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel.
