Giving Students the GWorld on a Card
New Colonial Cash Opens the Door to a Wider Variety
of Options
By Thomas
Kohout
The University recently established a new form of currency for students,
Colonial Cash, opening the door to a wider variety of goods and services
available using GWorld Cards.
By blending the traditional meal plan with the Debit Dollars program,
students now have the flexibility to shop at more than 70 participating
retail and dining venues on campus or in the local community using their
GWorld Cards. Students can use their Colonial Cash to purchase anything
from a cup of coffee at Starbucks to a Coke at one of the Universitys
24 vending machines in eight locations set up to accept GWorld Cards.
(An additional 14 machines are being added in four more locations over
the next several weeks.)
Colonial Cash gives students greater spending flexibility and the
freedom to choose from a much wider range of options because it can be
used anywhere the GWorld Card is accepted, said Deborah Wright,
director of the GWorld Card Program.
As an added benefit, students using their GWorld Cards at any of the 24
GW Dining Services locations will be exempt from District of Columbia
sales tax. Like the previous meal plan, undergraduates living in on-campus
housing (with the exception of the fraternities and sororities in Townhouse
Row) are required to participate in the Colonial Cash Program at a level
based on their class standing. Undergraduates who live off campus, as
well as graduate students, are not required to join the plan but are encouraged
to take advantage of the convenience and benefits offered by Colonial
Cash. For the 200304 academic year, Colonial Cash will be valid
from Aug. 25 to May 16, 2004. Dollars roll over from the fall to spring
semesters, however, dollars remaining after the spring are forfeited.
As Colonial Cash is a student program, faculty and staff cannot participate.
However, faculty and staff may continue to participate in the Debit Dollars
program. The optional program available for all University employees will
continue to work like cash at any of the participating merchants, including
conveniently located GW dining venues at Marvin Center, Funger Hall and
the Lerner Health & Wellness Center, as well as the vending machines
set up to accept GWorld Cards.
Many GW employees dont even know theyre eligible for
the Debit Dollars program, Wright said, adding that GWorld Cards
are automatically set up to carry Debit Dollars. At any time they
could add money to their account and start enjoying the convenience of
using Debit Dollars.
Students and University employees may go online to the GWorld Web site
to make Colonial Cash or Debit Dollars deposits using Visa or MasterCard
and to view a record of their purchases. Individuals also may make deposits
by cash, check or credit card at the newly renovated GWorld Card Office
located at Marvin Center 501. The various Value Transfer Stations located
throughout campus in Gelman Library, the Marvin Center, Himmelfarb Library
and Jacob Burns Law Library also take cash deposits.
