Acknowledgements
Shelley A. Bader, associate vice president, educational resources, GWUMC, was presented the Health Sciences Communications Association’s (HeSCA) highest award, The Golden Raster. The award recognizes leaders and innovators in the field of health sciences education and instructional technology through leadership and service. Bader served as HeSCA’s president in 1984–85.

Prabir Bagchi, professor of business administration, SBPM, presented “Supply Chain Management Challenges in E-Commerce” at the International Logistics Conference at Reykjavik, Iceland.

Don Hawkins, professor of tourism studies, Eisenhower Professor of Tourism Policy, and research professor of medicine, SBPM, was a panelist for a discussion regarding environmental management issues at the annual meeting of the Travel Industry Association of America, in March. In May and June, Hawkins participated in the Biodiversity Conservation and Economic Growth Workshops regarding Ecotourism Strategy Formation and Product Development in Bulgaria. He also supervised the MBA Consulting Practicum, which conducted rapid assessments of tourism potential in the surrounding communities near two parks in Bulgaria.

Pradeep Rau, professor of business administration, and Craig Krueger, SBPM, chair of Target Wireless, presented “Positioning Wireless for the Twenty First Century” at the Cellular Telephone and Internet Association’s “Wireless Agenda” conference in Dallas, TX.

Geralyn Schulz, associate professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, S. Leon, and S. Sulc, presented “Speech Motor Learning In Parkinson’s Disease” at the fourth International Speech Motor Conference, in Nijmegan, The Netherlands, June 13.

Charles Toftoy, adjunct associate professor of management science, SBPM, presented the commencement address at the Keller Graduate School. Toftoy spoke about his experiences as an entrepreneur and professor and of the need for humility.

Awards
Shelley A. Bader, associate vice president, educational resources, GWUMC, and several co-authors, received the annual HeSCA/JBC Literary Award for best article of the year 2000 for the article “Biomedical Communications: Past, Present, Future,” published in the Journal of Biocommunication.

Warren Errol Brown, JD/MPH ’98, was named one of People magazine’s “America’s Top 50 Bachelors” in its July 2. issue. Brown is the founder of Web. s Cakes, baking and distributing his own homemade cakes through gourmet stores and his Web site.

Marva A. Gumbs, executive director for the GW Career Center, was awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE) for her significant roles in the association for more than 10 years.

Charles Toftoy, adjunct associate professor of management science, SBPM, was one of 12 people honored with a 2001 Capital Restaurant & Hospitality Award by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington.

Appointments
Linda Dent-Brown has been appointed publications director for GW Medical Center. She comes to GW after serving as communications and publications director for the Charles County School System. Dent-Brown replaces Ray McDougall who left to become the communications director for the Sabin Vaccine Institute.

Mary Corcoran was recently appointed interim chair of the Department of Health Care Sciences, SPHHS. She is currently a visiting professor in the department.

Edward Gnehm, Jr., GW Board of Trustees, was named by President Bush to serve as ambassador to Jordan. Gnehm previously has served as ambassador to Australia and to Kuwait.

Leo Moersen, associate professor of accountancy and business law, has been appointed the new academic director of GW’s Madrid Study Center. While abroad, Moersen will teach an international business law course.

Carolynn Reid-Wallace, secretary, GW Board of Trustees, was elected to become president of Fisk University. Reid-Wallace becomes the first woman president in Fisk’s 135-year history.

Geralyn Schulz, associate professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, was named to the International Editorial Review Board of Profono, the premier speech language pathology journal of Brazil, Rev CEFAC, Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Journal Brazil.

Publications
Reid Click, assistant professor of international business, SBPM, and Joshua D. Coval, University of Michigan, published the textbook, "The Theory and Practice of International Financial Management."

Amitai Etzioni, University Professor, published "Next: The Road to the Good Society and The Monochrome Society." The latter recently received favorable reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and Library Journal.

Geralyn Schulz, associate professor of speech and hearing, CCAS, along with L. Stein and R. Micallef, published “Speech Motor Learning: Preliminary Data” in Clinical Linguistics and Phonetics, 15, pp. 157–161.

Mark Reeves, associate professor of physics, CCAS, along with his research scientist, Yuguo Wang, and co-workers at the Naval Research Laboratories, published the paper “Uniaxial Dielectric Anisotropy in Ba0.5 Sr0.5 TiO3 Films Studied By Evanescent-Probe Microscopy,” in the journal, Applied Physics Letters.

Ryan Watkins, assistant professor of educational technology, GSEHD, co-authored Useful Educational Results: Defining, Prioritizing, and Accomplishing (2001) with Roger Kaufman of Florida State University and Doug Leigh of Pepperdine University.
