Manatt Re-elected Board of Trustees Chair, Five New Trustees Appointed


The George Washington University Board of Trustees announced the results of its recent executive committee elections as well as the appointment of five new members to the 33-member Board following its June 26 retreat.

The Honorable Charles T. Manatt (JD ’62), founding partner of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, was elected to a three-year term as Chair of the Board, a position he has held since 2001. Other members elected to the executive committee are Vice Chair Patricia Gurne (JD ’69), partner of Gurne, Porter and Baulig, PLLC; Vice Chair W. Russell Ramsey (BA ’81), managing partner of Capital Crossover Partners, LP; Secretary Lydia Thomas, president and CEO of Mitretek Systems; and, Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Cowles (JD ’90), chair of Cowles Publishing Company.

Among the five new members named to the Board, Richard W. Blackburn, Esq., (JD ’67), Maria M. Bonetti (AA ’65 — MVC) and Mark Shenkman (MBA ’67) were chosen to serve as charter trustees. Allen From (BBA ’72) was selected as an alumni trustee, and Kristy McDonnell (BS ’00, MS ’01) was selected as a recent alumni trustee.

Blackburn, a retired chief administrative officer, executive vice president and general counsel for Duke Energy Corp., was appointed as a charter trustee. Blackburn also serves on the GW Law School Advisory Board and is a trustee of the New England Legal Foundation.

Bonetti serves as vice president of Centro de Integracion Familiar, an institution charged with promoting the psychological and socioeconomic well being of the Dominican Republic.

Shenkman, who also serves on the School of Business Advisory Board, founded Shenkman Capital Management in 1985. The firm manages portfolios for institutions primarily in the Far East. He co-authored and edited High Yield Bonds: Market Structure, Portfolio Management and Credit Risk Modeling, the first business school textbook focused solely on the high yield market.

From, a practicing attorney and partner in the firm Howard, Stallings, From and Hutson in Raleigh, NC, has served as vice president and president of the GW Parents Association, is a member of the Athletic Directors Club and serves on the GW Alumni Association Board of Directors. He currently is leading the initiative to establish a Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill alumni chapter. From also has served on the Board of Tax Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.

McDonnell is a former Presidential Administrative Fellow in the School of Engineering and Applied Science where she organized undergraduate recruitment and retention programs. She is an employee with the Fairfax, VA, firm Energy Engineer for Pace Global Energy Services. McDonnell currently serves as chair for the Engineer Alumni Association Programs Committee.
