GW Department Honored for Excellence in Recruitment, Retention and Training

The American Psychological Association (APA) selected GW’s clinical psychology PhD program for this year’s Richard D. Suinn Minority Achievement Award. The Suinn Award is a national award recognizing excellence in recruitment, retention and training of ethnic minority PhD students.

“Diversity is an important part of life at GW and something that enriches the University experience for students, faculty and staff,” said Elliot Hirshman, Thelma Hunt Professor of Psychology and chair of the psychology department. “The psychology department prides itself on the outstanding educational and extracurricular opportunities we offer our students, as well as the benefits from the multiple ethnicities and opinions of our students.”

The Suinn Award was formally presented to the Department of Psychology July 29 at the APA convention in Honolulu. GW was one of three universities, along with Rutgers University and the University of New Mexico, to receive the Suinn Award. Doctoral programs in psychology are nominated for the award by ethnic minority students.
