The baseball team’s postseason run ended with an 8–2 tournament loss to No. 14 Richmond on May 17. GW was one of the final four teams in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the third consecutive year. Seniors Travis Crowder and Tony Dokoupil played in their 200th and final baseball games for the Colonials. A-10 Rookie of the Year Tom Shanley ended the year with an conference-high .398 batting average. The Colonials finished this season 37–18 (12–9 in the A-10). GW Places 165 Student-Athletes On A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll
One-hundred and sixty-five GW student-athletes were named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for 2002–03. In order to be named to the list, a student-athlete must achieve at least a 3.0 GPA in all course work completed to date.

Only 1,783 student-athletes from the 12 institutions in the conference earned a spot on this year’s list. GW ranked fifth among the schools, however the rankings do not include the GPA for athletes competing in squash, water polo, or men’s rowing.

GW Extends Hobbs’ Contract

Entering his third year as head coach of the men’s basketball team, Karl Hobbs will have some more job security after his contract was extended through June 2008. A former assistant coach at the University of Connecticut, Hobbs was hired at GW on May 7, 2001. In two seasons as head coach, the Colonials have a record of 24–33.

Men’s Basketball Signs Four
Jaaron Greene, J.R. Pinnock, Carl Elliott, and Ricky Lucas have signed letters-of-intent to play basketball for the Colonials beginning this fall.
The 6-foot-10, 275-pound Greene averaged 12.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks at Mt. Zion Christian Academy in Durham, NC. Mt. Zion also produced Orlando Magic star Tracy McGrady.

Pinnock, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound player, averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds as a senior at Coastal Christian Academy in Virginia Beach, VA. Both figures led the team. Pinnock was ranked No. 67 among the Top 100 recruits by RivalsHoops.com and he was ranked No. 2 in the state of Virginia by Virginiaprep.com in June 2002.

Elliott, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound post-graduate student averaged 17.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.1 steals at Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA. He led the Hilltoppers to the New England Prep School Athletic Association championship and was named MVP of the tournament after totaling 50 points in the final two games. Worcester posted a 25–4 record.

Signed in November, Lucas is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound local sharpshooter who was named Washington Post All-Met this year. In his senior season at Herndon, he was named Northern Region player of the year and averaged 22.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, including a 40-point performance in a regular season game against South Lakes.
