Summer 2004
Baseball Hits 41-Win High Mark
The mens baseball team concluded its season with a 4118 record,
the second highest win total in school history, as well as the most-ever
conference wins with a 195 Atlantic 10 mark. Six players also were
recognized for their performances this year.
The Colonials fell short, however, in the conference tournament, losing
to Richmond and Rhode Island in the double-elimination contests, while
posting a win over Fordham. St. Bonaventure clinched its first-ever title
and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the only bid for the A-10 this year.
I am pleased with our year. We have some good young talent in the
program and a lot to build on, said GW head coach Tom Walter after
the loss to Rhode Island on May 29. Im excited about the future
of George Washington baseball.
Since becoming head coach eight years ago, Walter has led the Colonials
to new heights, winning 275 games during his tenure, the most in GW baseball
history. Over the last four seasons, the Colonials have won 66 percent
of their games with a record of 15882.
Freshman Anthony Smith emerged as a star player for the Colonials this
year as he was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year, capping a record run
of six A-10 Rookie of the Week honors. Smith led the conference in RBI
with 67, finished second in home runs with 15 and posted a batting average
of .369. The freshman from Katonah, NY, also pitched the Colonials to
six victories.
Four other Colonials also were named to the first team all-conference.
Anthony Raglani led GW in runs (63) and stolen bases (13) in addition
to his 12 home runs and 50 RBI. Tom Shanley finished the season batting
.332 with 100 total bases, building on his 2003 Rookie of the Year and
Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors. Dan Sullivan went 104
with a 3.82 ERA. Derrik Lutz netted 12 saves and three wins in 30 appearances.
Brad Rosenblat was named to the academic all-conference team, posting
a 3.74 grade point average and a team-leading .459 on-base percentage
with 10 homers and 43 RBI.
Hostetler Named Rookie of the Year
Freshman Laura Hostetler was named the A-10 Conference Rookie of the Year
for womens lacrosse, and she joined teammate Erin Berry on the All-Conference
team and junior Jenny Heisler was voted to the Academic All-Conference
team.
Hostetler earned an A-10 record six A-10 Rookie of the Week awards and
established four school records in her first collegiate season. She twice
set a single-game record for goals with six against Howard University
on March 26 and broke that mark with seven against Mount St. Marys
on April 25. She also holds the single-season records for goals (45),
points (62) and shares the assists record of 17 with Heisler.
