Schario to Lead Media Relations

Tracy Schario joined the University on June 1 as the new director of media relations and GW’s primary spokesperson. She most recently served as vice president and a member of the management team for Strategic Communications Group in Silver Spring.

“Tracy stands out as an excellent fit for this position,” said Chris Kormis, executive director of University Relations. “She is a smart, articulate professional with just the right balance of media and management experience.” Added GW Vice President for Communications Michael Freedman, “Tracy rounds out an outstanding, proactive team within University Relations. Over the past three years, new dimensions have been added to everyone’s portfolio and Tracy’s strengths play well to the needs of today and tomorrow.”

Schario’s professional portfolio extends for 10 years and also includes tenure with the US Department of State as a consular assistant at the US Consulate General, Surabaya, Indonesia, where she assisted with evacuation plans and crisis communications for citizens of western countries residing in East Java during the President Suharto political crisis. She also was a community liaison office coordinator at the US Embassy Manila, Philippines. While in Manila she also co-anchored an evening news program. An alumna of The Ohio State University and Ohio University, Schario holds BA and MA degrees in communications.

Matt Nehmer, a media relations specialist at the University since 1999, was named assistant director in March and will help Schario lead GW’s wide-ranging media operations.
