Recognition of the awards, honors, and recent publications of the GW faculty and staff


Acknowlegements:
Jonathan Chaves, professor of Chinese and Columbian College Professor, CCAS, presented the lecture, “Poetry and Painting Together: The Sister Arts in China,” at Sotheby’s Institute.

Dennis W. Johnson, associate dean of the Graduate School of Political Management, CCAS, was among 12 invited political scientists and presented “Campaigning on the Internet,” at a political science/ political consulting symposium at the University of Florida.

Peter Lucas, professor of anthropology, CCAS, Sharon Lynch, professor of teacher preparation and special education, GSEHD, Brian Richmond, assistant professor of anthropology, CCAS, Christopher Snyder, professor of economics, CCAS, and Bernard Wood, Henry R. Luce Professor in Human Origins and professor of human evolutionary anatomy, CCAS, spoke at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting. In the session “Better Nutrition for a Better World,” Wood presented “A Palaeoanthropological Perspective on the Origins of Human Diet” and Lucas presented “Diet in Human Evolution as Seen from an Ecological Perspective.” In the session “Teaching and Learning in Science” Lynch presented “Implementing a Curriculum Unit Highly Rated by Project 2061: Results from a Scale-up Study.” Richmond presented “Trabecular Bone Structure and Function in Fossils,” in the Genomics, Evolution & Developmental Biology. And Snyder presented “CO W/McCABE,” in the Scientific Conduct and the Doing of Science session.

Carmen Neuberger, visiting professor of higher education administration, GSEHD, presented “Graduate Preparation, Faculty and Students in Partnership with Student Affairs” at the 2005 Annual Convention of the American College Personnel Association, along with Mike Mattmiller, senior Web developer for SASSCommTech, and GSEHD graduate students Joshua Schimmerling and Reyna Larios.

Appointments:
Kathryn Bugg, Office of University Events in the Office of the Vice President for Communications, has been promoted to executive associate.

Richard Golden was recently named special assistant for broadcast operations and University events. Golden hosts and produces a series of GW radio programs, including GW Presents American Jazz and Beyond Category, which air locally on 1260-AM and nationally on XM Satellite Radio.

Sarah Kunkleman was recently named assistant director of communications, GWSB. She joins GW from FedEx headquarters in Memphis, where she served as a senior communications specialist.

Awards:
Salah Hassan, professor of business administration, GWBS, received the 2005 “Outstanding Marketing Teacher” Award from the Academy of Marketing Science at the academy’s annual meeting.

Maureen McGuire-Kuletz, assistant research professor, assistant director Region III Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program, GSEHD, was selected as a Switzer Scholar on the 25th Switzer Memorial Seminar. The seminar, named for the late Mary E. Switzer who was a trailblazer for innovative programs for people with disabilities, is administered by the National Rehabilitation Association.

Lawrence Singleton, associate professor of accountancy, GWSB, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Human Resource Certification Institute and was asked to join its Finance Committee. He will serve a three-year term in the position.

Publications:
Robert J. Cottrol, professor of law, history, and sociology, and Harold Green Research professor of Law, GWLS, published “Brown and the Contemporary Brazilian Struggle Against Racial Inequality: Some Preliminary Comparative Thoughts” in University of Pittsburgh Law Review, v. 66, n. 113 (2004). Cottrol also was an invited speaker at a conference on “Race, Inequality, and Education: Challenges for Affirmative Action in Brazil and the United States.” Cottrol delivered his paper, “The United States: The Incomplete Emancipation,” in Brasilia, Brazil.

Peter Hill, emeritus professor of history, published his book Napoleon’s Troublesome Americans: Franco-American Relations, 1804–15, (Potomac Press, Washington, DC, 2005).
