GW Inspects Service Lines, Tests Campus Water

In response to information provided by the DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) and the publicity surrounding the issue of lead in the area’s water supply, The George Washington University has undertaken several initiatives with respect to the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses.

The first initiative — already completed — involved a visual inspection of water service lines in all University buildings. After GW received from WASA a list of University-owned properties identifying the type of service line believed to connect each building to the water main, University employees sought to validate the accuracy of WASA’s data by performing visual inspections of the service lines in more than 120 buildings on GW’s two Washington, DC, campuses.

The University’s visual inspection revealed that only one GW building, located at 2142 G St., has a lead service line. The University notified the occupants of that building and plans to replace that service line are underway.

As the University undertook the visual inspections, it also provided a link on the Campus Advisories Web site and encouraged the University community to connect to WASA’s Web site to obtain additional information on the issues.

A contractor retained by the University will begin testing water after collecting samples from all University buildings on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. The University will share the results of these efforts with the GW community once the testing has been completed and the results are available.

In the meantime, members of the University community are urged to follow WASA’s guidelines, which are available through a link on GW’s Campus Advisories Web site.
