Rodriguez Delivers 2003 Shapiro Lecture

J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor Miguel Rodríguez, former president of Costa Rica, delivered this year’s Elliott School of International Affairs Shapiro Lecture on March 6 titled, “From Academia to Government and Back.”

Focusing on his life before and after the presidency, Rodríguez recalled his diverse career and how, as head of state, he used the tools of an academic to enhance political influence and articulate an agenda for Costa Rica’s advancement toward the new economy of knowledge. Now back in academia, Rodríguez has focused on analyzing his administration’s achievements and the development possibilities of Latin America, which is the subject of his new book, “The Costa Rican Solution” (La Solución Costarricense, EUNED and Fundación Popular Iberoamericana, San José, 2003).
