Alumnus Haber Selected to Receive Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award

By Julia Jacobelli

GW alumnus Stephen Haber (BA ’79, ESIA) has been selected to receive this year’s Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award.

Haber received his bachelor’s from the Elliott School of International Affairs and went on to receive his master’s in history at the University of California in 1981, where he also received his PhD in history in 1985. He was an assistant professor in history at Columbia University, before moving to Stanford University in 1987, where he served as a professor of history, political science, and economics. Haber was appointed director of the Science History Institute at Stanford in 1994.

In 2001, Haber was named the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow for the Hoover Institution at Stanford. In 2003, he was named the A.A. and Jeanne Welch Milligan Professor. He also served as the associate dean for social sciences and the director of graduate studies for the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford.

Haber has been the recipient of two Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Awards from Stanford: once in 1992 and again in 2002. Haber is the author of two books and numerous journal articles. He has been the recipient of multiple grants and fellowships, and has served on several editorial and advisory boards. He has held visiting appointments at multiple universities, including the California Institute of Technology. Haber also has an extensive history of university service.

The Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award selection process begins in the fall when Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Lehman sends out a call for nominations to the dean of each school at GW. Nominations also may be made by faculty members, but the nomination must be supported by that school’s dean by a written letter and a completed nomination packet. Recipients are selected from the nominations by the Council of Deans. The award carries a $1,000 honorarium. Haber elected to donate his honorarium to the Elliott School.

Haber will be visiting campus to participate in events planned by the Elliott School, as well as to attend the awards luncheon hosted by Lehman April 21–22.
