Five Inducted in 2004 GW Athletic Hall of Fame Class

Membership in GW’s Athletic Hall of Fame expanded as five newly-elected members were inducted in ceremonies Jan. 24. The new class is represented by: Tajama Abraham Ngongba, women’s basketball; Bambi (Bowman) Burgess, women’s swimming; Sheila Hoben, athletic academic administrator; Scott R. Lutz, golf; and Glauco R. Souza, men’s water polo.

Abraham Ngongba won four letters at GW between 1993–97 and graduated as the University’s all-time leading scorer (2,134 points) most games played (130) and second all-time leading rebounder (970).

Burgess is the most decorated women’s swimmer in the history of GW, earning the conference’s Most Outstanding Women’s Swimmer of the Year in 1994 and 1995 and still holding three Atlantic 10 championship record times. She was the first Colonials women’s swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships

Hoben was a prime contributor to the Department of Athletics staff for more than 20 years. She first joined the coaching staff in 1977 as head women’s tennis coach, but seven years later she moved on to be academic coordinator. Hoben created and implemented successful programs to help student-athletes balance their obligations.

Lutz was a four-time letter-winner in golf between 1993–96. He made an immediate impact on the Colonials golf program as a freshman earning him team MVP honors. Lutz finished in the top five in three of his first four tournaments.

Souza, a four-year letter-winner at GW from 1990–93, is the most accomplished men’s water polo player. A decade after he played his final match for the Colonials, Souza still holds 11 of the team’s 15 individual records.

This is the 45th class elected since the University’s Hall of Fame was founded in 1959, bringing the total number of inductees to 116.
