Washington's 271st Birthday Celebration Slated for Feb. 22

With George Washington’s birthday falling on a Saturday, the University has turned the 271st birthday celebration of its namesake into a day-long party starting at noon Feb. 22 with an Alumni Tailgater at the Alumni House. They will be serving the usual pre-game food (snacks, pizza, beverages) plus birthday cake in honor of GW. Any alumni who would like to attend should RSVP to 994-6435. Tickets for the men’s basketball game against La Salle will be available for pick up at Alumni House. Tipoff time is 2 pm.

After the game there will be a dedication of GW’s new weathervane at 4:30 pm. The weathervane sits atop the Women’s Studies building at the corner of 22nd and Eye streets. It was designed by the late Travis Tuck and donated to the University by Trustee Luther Brady. The dedication will take place on the 2nd floor of the MPA Building, and will feature Colonial Tea and the exhibition “Campus Icons,” a celebration of Travis Tuck’s weathervane of George Washington and selected outdoor sculpture from the GW Permanent Collection, RSVP to 994-7129.

To conclude the day a bonfire will be lit on the University Yard starting at 6 pm. No Washington’s birthday celebration would be complete without tri-cornered hats, colonial food, fife and drum music, GW’s mascot George, and the third annual cherry pie eating contest. Each student organization and residence hall floor is invited to send one contestant. Participants will be split up into two categories, male and female. Whoever eats the most pie in two minutes and 22 seconds will win a catered meeting for their student organization or residence hall floor.
