2005–06 Columbian Research Fellows Announced

The Columbian College of Arts and Sciences named Professor of Religion and Human Sciences and Chair of the Department of Religion Alfred Hiltebeitel, Associate Professor of Physics Mark Reeves, and Associate Professor of English Gayle Wald Columbian Research Fellows for 2005–06.

Hiltebeitel will devote his fellowship to his book, Dharma; Reeves will devote his time toward his research, Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy for Proteomics; and Wald will focus on her biography, Music in the Air: The Life and Career of Rosetta Tharpe.

The Columbian Research Fellows program is designed to provide substantial support for select faculty members in their research and creative activities. The fellows are freed from teaching duties for the year. They must, however, maintain a presence within the GW community, participating in discussions and activities related to their project as well as presenting at least one public lecture on their project. They also must present a final summary lecture in the year following the fellowship, teach a Dean’s Seminar on the subject in the year following the fellowship, and develop an innovative teaching plan that will bring in a Teaching Fellow and keep senior faculty in contact with freshmen. The Columbian Research Fellows program is one of the school’s effort to use resources strategically to spur research and creative activity. In just its second year the Columbian Research Fellows program has yielded half a dozen books.
