GW's Sigur Center for Asian Studies and The Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies invite you to “US Policy on Asia: Where do we go from here,” with Dr.  Kurt Campbell, Former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and current Chairman/CEO of The Asia Group. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Amitai Etzioni and then with the audience.

Hillary Clinton on Dr. Kurt Campbell in her recently published book Hard Choices:

“Jim Steinberg and I quickly agreed that the person who should run the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs was Dr. Kurt Campbell. Kurt, who helped shape Asia policy at the Pentagon and the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration, became a key architect of our strategy. Besides being a creative strategic thinker and devoted public servant, he was also an irrepressible traveling companion, fond of pranks and never without a joke or a story.”

Dr. Kurt Campbell is Chairman and CEO of The Asia Group, Chairman of CNAS and a Director for Standard Chartered Bank. From 2009-2013, he was Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He received the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award and was recognized by the Queen with the Order of Australia and the New Zealand Order of Merit. Dr. Campbell was formerly the CEO of CNAS and director of the Aspen Strategy Group. He previously was DASD for Asia at the Pentagon, a director on the NSC Staff, and deputy special counselor to the president for NAFTA. Dr. Campbell is the author or editor of ten books and is writing another on the pivot.

Amitai Etzioni is a sociologist who taught at Columbia University, Harvard, and Berkeley and serves as a University Professor at The George Washington University. He was a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution in 1978 before serving as a Senior Advisor to the White House from 1979-1980. In 1990, he founded The Communitarian Network. A study by Richard Posner identified him as one of the top 100 American intellectuals as measured by academic citations.
