Dear Dr. Holland:

     I am enclosing herewith a copy of a letter from Dr. Alberto F.
Thompson to Dr. R.S. Stone regarding declassification of reports
for the volume on Clinical Medicine and Toxicology of the Plutonium
Project Record, part of the National Nuclear Energy Series.

     You will note in the second paragraph Dr. Thompson advises
that report CH-3592 entitled "Uranium Excretion Studies" by S.
Schwartz is classified RESTRICTED for medical reasons at your
request.  In paragraph four, it is stated that report MUC-EER-209
entitled "Distribution and Excretion of Plutonium" by Dr. J.J.
Nickson and Dr. E.R. Russell has not been declassified since Dr.
B.M. Brundage has stated that medical reasons make the report
substantially underclassifiable.  It has been reclassified
RESTRICTED.

     Dr. Thompson suggests that Dr. Stone discuss reasons with you. 
Dr. Stone has asked that I contact you regarding declassification
of these two reports.  We would like to know if the policy with
regard to declassification of medical reports has now been modified
so as to permit declassification of the above reports.

     Further, we would like the same information, that is, reasons
for withholding declassification, and information regarding
declassifiability of each report in light of the present policy for
each of the following papers.  These papers also are part of the
volume on Clinical Medicine and Toxicology.

     CH-3696 "An Introduction to the Toxicology of Uranium" by A.
     Tannenbaum, H. Silverstone, S. Schwartz & E.S.G. Barron

     CH-3607 "Distribution and Excretion of Plutonium in Two Human
     Subjects" by E.R. Russell and J.J. Nickson
