i. Beta numbers denote the relative bluntness or sharpness of a reentry vehicle, enabling it to move to target more or less quickly through the atmosphere.  The sharper the RV the higher the Beta number.
ii. Radar systems could identify reentry vehicles, but the more pointed they were their "radar crosssection" would become smaller and detection by then-available radar warning systems would become more difficult.
