Deadlines
The University’s Fall semester begins in late August, Spring semester in early January, and summer sessions in mid-May. Not all programs admit students throughout the year; some offer admission only in the Fall or Spring semesters. International students are generally not admitted for the summer session.
We encourage international applicants to submit their application and supporting documents as early as possible. Applicants who need an I-20 or DS-2019 from The George Washington University or who are applying for graduate assistantships/fellowships must submit all required application documents by the following deadlines:
Fall semester: January 15
Spring semester: September 1
If you will not be submitting a visa request to GW or applying for an assistantship or fellowship, you should submit your completed application for admission by the deadlines listed in the program admission information page for the program to which you are applying.
Special Admissions Requirements for International Students
In addition to the application materials described under Required Materials and the program admission information pages, international applicants should review the section below on international transcripts, a well as the following pages:
English Language Requirements
Visa Requests
Following these application tips will help smooth the application and visa process:
- When completing the application, be sure to provide your full, legal name, as listed in your passport. If your transcripts or other supporting documents were issued in another name, also include that name on your application and attach a letter of explanation and evidence of the name change.
- Take standardized tests early enough to ensure that scores reach the admissions office before the application deadline.
- The $60 non-refundable application fee must be paid in U.S. dollars, by credit card (online only), international money order, or check. Your name must be written on the check or money order. Cash, international postal money orders, or Eurochecks are not accepted.
- Include a photocopy of the biographic/identification page of your passport with your application.
- If you have any questions, please contact the admissions office. Contact information and office hours (Eastern Standard Time) are listed at the bottom of each program admission information pages.
International Transcripts and Academic Credentials
Transcript, Detailed Marks Certificate, or comparable document showing all course work, grades, and proof of earned degrees must be submitted for each institution attended. This is required for all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. If a separate proof of degree is needed, it must include an official certification by the institution where the degree was obtained and list the title of the degree and the month and year of graduation. Please note that official records are defined as original documents issued by the institution (not photocopies) which bear the actual signature of the Registrar and the seal of the issuing institution. Transcripts must be forwarded in their original, sealed envelopes.
Unless academic records and diplomas are routinely issued in English by the institution, the official records, in their original language, must be submitted, along with an authorized, complete, and exact English translation. Translations alone will not be accepted. Both documents must be certified by an official government agency or authorized official.
If the institution at which the courses were taken issues one official copy of this record and no other, a copy of the certificate may be submitted, provided it is certified by an official government agency or authorized official. Do not send a document to GW that cannot be replaced. Please note that the admission office may ask to see the original document, after arrival at the University and prior to enrolling for course work.
If you are applying to a program in the College of Professional Studies or the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, please note that all international transcripts must be submitted to an approved, accredited independent evaluation agency prior to submission. A list of acceptable foreign credential evaluation services is available on the national Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) at www.naces.org/members.htm.
