James Van Hook: Professorial Lecturer

Beth Vann:
Ms. Vann specializes in the issues around violence against women and children
in complex humanitarian emergencies. Since 1998, her work has focused on
gender-based violence technical advising, training, capacity building, writing,
and research with displaced communities, NGOs, UN agencies, and host governments.
Professor Vann has over 25 years experience developing and managing public
health and social services programs and has worked in 19 countries. She holds
a master's degree in social work and a bachelor's degree in psychology. Professor
Vann is a part-time faculty member at GWU and works as a consulting technical
advisor and educator with international NGOs and UN agencies.
Warren Van Wicklin: Professorial
Lecturer
Professor Van Wicklin is an international development consultant specializing
in social development, policy analysis, and evaluation, with a particular emphasis
on community participation, NGOs, and involuntary resettlement. He worked in
the World Bank's environment, social development, and evaluation departments
from 1993-2001. Since then he has continued to consult for the World Bank,
as well as the International Finance Corporation, the Asian Development Bank,
and the UK Department for International Development. He was the team leader
of evaluations of participation, involuntary resettlement, and safeguard policies
and has field experience in more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin
America. He has written one book (Involuntary Resettlement: Comparative Perspectives,
Rutgers, NJ: Transaction, 2000) and several articles on participation and involuntary
resettlement. His PhD (1990) is in political science from MIT. His doctoral
dissertation was on US NGOs and their development projects in Central America
