Post-September 11 - Community Spirit Grows
"Community spirit...is making a comeback. As people are reminded of the fragility of human existence, they no longer want to live the atomized life. Instead, they are reconnecting with their communities and becoming more civic-minded, as well as seeking comfort at home by cocooning with families and close friends." (Richard Tomkins, Financial Times, 11/4/01)

Still the Ugly American?
Standard Afghan fare consists mainly of bread, meat and rice. However, relief food dropped by American planes contained such American favorites as peanut butter and jelly. Most Afghans eat with their hands, but each American kit contained plastic cutlery. The directions on each packet were printed in English, French and Spanish; Afghans, in the area food was droped, speak mainly Dari. (New York Times, 10/14/01)

Brits: No Faith in First Amendment
Home Secretary David Blunkett, Britain's top law-enforcement official, said new legislation would make it a crime to spread religious hatred - just as spreading racial hatred is already an offense. (Wall Street Journal, 10/9/01)

Community Anti-Drug Coalition
The Community Anti-Drug Coalition's National Leadership Forum XII, the largest gathering of substance abuse prevention and treatment professionals in the country, will take place December 12-14, 2001 at the Historic Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.
