Lectures, Tours, and Collaboration Opportunities

Many of the Gallery's exhibits can serve as a means of interdisciplinary study for students in the University community and beyond. If you would like to collaborate with the Gallery to bring a guest speaker, hold a gallery talk, or build a program around the interpretation of an exhibition, please let us know. We are here to work with the University community to make the arts more visible to all.

We encourage instructors to utilize all exhibitions at the Gallery as a resource for integrating arts into other academic disciplines. For ideas or more information, please give us a call at (202) 994-1525.

Visual Literacy Program

America Reads: Literacy and Art Appreciation Program

The Visual Literacy program was inaugurated in 1998-99 and continues to strengthen enduring relationships with DC-area schools and after-school programs, and create new ones. Working through the DC Reads Program, we regularly organize groups of children to visit the Gallery and construct projects and workshops for the children that incorporate visual literacy and art appreciation. Our relocation to a new space in the Media and Public Affairs building has improved our ability to host these programs. We now have a "study room" where we can hold hands-on art projects in a designated setting apart from the Gallery's exhibition space. We are looking forward to renewing our busy schedule of visual literacy workshops in the fall semester and to continue to utilize the capabilities of our new location. The Gallery's Visual Literacy Specialist, Shayna Kulik (ca. 2001) leading an art workshop in the Gallery's new "Study Room." The hands-on project is only one component of the session, which also includes a Gallery walk-through tour, various reading exercises, and lots of interaction. The goal of this program is to incorporate art appreciation with the promotion of literacy, and create a fun environment where the children can explore new things and spend their after-school time in a constructive way.
