HOW TO RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS
Here
is an outline of what we found to be the best ways to recruit volunteers
for part of the chapter leadership.
Find Volunteers
The most effective way to find volunteers is during alumni events.
- Mingle and talk with different alumni.
- Gauge their interest in getting involved. Ask yourself, “What
do we do that would be of interest to them?”
- Take business cards or contact information of those who show
interest.
- Be honest and up-front with people when recruiting. Do not minimize
the work or the time required. Tell people what they will do and
how long they are expected to do it.
- The next day, send an e-mail to follow up and assign a task.
Assign Tasks
The best way to keep a volunteer engaged is to give them a specific
task.
- Once you know how they’re interested in helping, give them a
job that fits.
- Define a time frame, provide guidance and relay expectations.
- Stay in touch. Once you assign something, make sure they know
you're there for guidance.
Follow-up
After the volunteer has completed their task, be sure to follow
up with them.
- Were they happy with the job assigned to them?
- Would they like to become a member of the chapter leadership?
- What else would they be interested in doing?
Stay Connected
- Invite new alumni volunteers to all chapter leadership meetings.
- Include new alumni volunteers on e-mail correspondence with
other members of the chapter leadership.
- Communicate with the Office of Alumni Relations when you successfully
recruit new volunteers for the chapter leadership.
