2006 Olympic Games Tip Sheet
Lisa Delpy Neirotti
Director of the Masters of Tourism Administration and Sports Management Programs
Associate Professor of Tourism and Sports Management
Lisa Delpy Neirotti, one of the world’s foremost Olympic scholars and director of the masters of tourism administration and sports management programs at The George Washington University School of Business, is available to comment on all aspects of the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. The Olympics begin on Feb. 10th and run through Feb. 26th. Delpy Neirotti will be leaving for Torino on Feb. 8th and returning Feb. 28th.
For the past sixteen years, Delpy Neirotti has been a professor of sport, event, and tourism management at GW. In 2001, she co-authored a book, The Ultimate Guide to Sports Event Management and Marketing.
Torino marks the 13th time Delpy Neirotti has attended the Olympic Games over the past 22 years. During each Olympic year, Delpy Neirotti teaches a unique semester-long course at GW where students experience a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look at organizing, financing, marketing, and hosting the Olympic Games. The course meets approximately six times on campus before heading to Torino where students learn about the history, structure, and organization of the Olympic movement and the Olympic Games. A term paper, two book reports, and an exam are required course work of the students at the end of the semester in addition to attending approximately 25 lectures and collecting research data on spectators in Torino during the Olympic Games.
The majority of students in the 2006 Games class are earning a masters degree in business administration or tourism administration with a concentration in sports, event, or hospitality management. Three undergraduates earning a degree in business administration are also enrolled.
The 2006 Games is the eighth course taught by Delpy Neirotti and will put students front and center of the Olympics events by traveling to the host city, in Torino, Italy. Several months after arriving at GW, Delpy Neirotti organized the University’s first trip to Olympics in Barcelona (1992), and subsequently organized trips to Lillehammer (1994), Atlanta (1996), Nagano (1998), Sydney (2000), Salt Lake City (2002), and Athens (2004). An additional 10 GW students will be interning for NBC in Torino as either runners/loggers or hosts the entire month of February.
