GW received numerous mentions in a Washington Post District Extra section cover story about colleges and universities being the biggest private employer in the District.  GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg was mentioned in the piece and GW ranked No. 1 on the Post's list of the top 20 private-sector employers.  The section also profiled area academic stars including GW professors Amitai Etzioni and James Horton (12/9).

 

A speech by Howard Dean at GW about the future of the Democratic Party was covered by the Associated Press (12/6, 12/8), Dow Jones International (12/8), The Palm Beach Post, The New York Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Columbain, The Seattle Times, Austin American-Statesman, The Hotline, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (12/9).

 

The GW Men's Basketball team was ranked in the top 25 of national college basketball polls by the Associated Press (No. 21-12/6, No. 19-12/13) and ESPN/USA Today (No. 25-12/6, No. 22-12/3).

 

A speech at GW by Dan Glickman, president and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, about copyright and piracy issues was mentioned by Technology Daily (12/1) and the Los Angeles Daily News (12/2).

 

GW's Inaugural Ball was mentioned by The Washington Times as one of the black tie events at different universities (12/3).

 

Campus Snacks, a late night snack delivery service started by GW students in March 2003 was profiled by The New York Times and Technology Daily (12/3).

 

GW was mentioned by The New York Times (12/3) and the International Herald Tribune (12/4) on the recent string of suicides at universities. 

 

A speech at GW by Taiwan's de facto ambassador David Lee was mentioned by Taipei Times (12/5). 

 

GW's Law School was mentioned by The Post Standard (Syracuse, NY) about the school's challenge of the Solomon Amendment, which maintains the federal government can withhold money from colleges and universities that obstruct military recruiters (12/5).

 

The GW Hospital was mentioned in an article in The Washington Times about hospitals in the District losing money for five straight years and the closing of D.C. General Hospital in 2001 (12/10).


The DC International Improvisation Plus+ Festival, co-curated by Maida Withers, professor of dance, and Peter Fraize, director of jazz studies, was reviewed by The Washington Post Weekend and The Washington Post Style sections (12/3), and WAMU Radio Metro Connection (12/10).

 
Gordon Adams, professor of the practice of international affairs, was mentioned by The Washington Post in regards to his book The Iron Triangle: The Politics of Defense Contracting (12/2).

 

Christopher Arterton, dean of the Graduate School of Political Management, was quoted by The Columbus Dispatch about abortion rights and routines (12/3).

 

Joseph Barbera, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, was quoted by Federal Computer Week about response practices for emergencies created by The National Incident Management System (12/6).

 

Jerome Barron, Harold H. Greene Professor of Law, was quoted by Scholastic Update about the cloning debate (12/13).

Cilluffo was quoted by the Associated Press about the proposal by Tom Ridge to reconsider the color coded terror alerts (12/15).

 

Amitai Etzioni, University Professor, was quoted by The Washington Post about the honoring of political sociologist Seymour Martin Lipset by the National Endowment for Democracy and the Canadian Embassy (12/8). He was profiled in a story in The Washington Post District Extra section about D.C.-area academic stars (12/9).

 

James Goldgeier, professor of political science, was quoted by NPR Talk of the Nation (12/2) and Agence France Presse (12/8) in regards to electoral issues in Ukraine.


Jerome Hauer, director of the Response to Emergencies and Disasters Institute, was featured on CNN Wolf Blitzer Reports, CNN Lou Dobbs Tonight, CNN NewsNight with Aaron Brown about the government's preparedness for another anthrax attack (12/15).

 

James Horton, Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies and History, was profiled in a story in The Washington Post District Extra section about D.C.-area academic stars (12/9).

 

Ambassador Karl Inderfurth, professor of the practice international affairs, wrote an op-ed that was featured in the Christian Science Monitor (12/1) and Agence France Presse (12/3) about the reconciliation of India and Pakistan.

 

Charles Karelis, research professor of philosophy, was mentioned by the Associated Press about his salary when he was president of Colgate University (12/13).

 

Taras Kuzio, visiting assistant professor of international affairs, was interviewed by NPR Talk of the Nation (12/8) and Voice of America (12/14) about the latest developments in Ukraine.

 

Bruce Lawlor, professorial lecturer of engineering management, was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle about the color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System (12/14).

 

Dr. Daniel Lieberman, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was quoted by The Washington Times about the medical student syndrome trend, which is when people diagnose themselves based on information they get online (12/7).

 

John Logsdon, director of the Space Policy Institute, was quoted by the Associated Press (12/8), The Commercial Appeal, The Baton Rouge Advocate, Journal Gazette, The Columbian, Kitchener-Waterloo Record, The Star-Ledger, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Deseret Morning News, and The Plain Dealer (12/9) about using astronauts, not robots, to carry out a crucial mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Logsdon was quoted by the Associated Press, Dow Jones International News (12/12, 12/13), Voice of America, The Columbian, Deseret Morning News, NPR Morning Edition, The New York Times, The Times-Picayune, Charleston Gazette (12/13), The Star Ledger (12/14), The Baton Rouge Advocate, and Los Angeles Daily News (12/15) in regards to the resignation of NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe.

George Novak, senior research scientist at the Aviation Institute, was quoted by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine about cashing in free airline miles (12/1).  Novak was quoted by Commuter/Regional Airline News about the deal GE Capital Aviation Service gave US Airways (12/6).  He was quoted by International Herald Tribune about the explosives that were at a Paris Airport

(12/7, 12/8).  Novak was quoted by the Deseret Morning News in regards to airline carriers going out of business in the next five years (12/13).

 

Yaron Peleg, assistant professor of Hebrew, was interviewed by NPR Weekend Edition about Israeli author Etgar Keret (12/12).

 

Arnold Reitze, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Professor of Environmental Law, was quoted by The Fort Worth Star-Telegram about the EPA's failure to tell the courts and public about deadline changes to reduce harmful emissions (12/12).

 

Stephen Saltzburg, Wallace and Beverley Woodbury University Professor, was mentioned on Fox News Channel Special Report with Brit Hume about Clarence Thomas' opinions as a member of the Supreme Court (12/6).

 

Michael Selmi, professor of law, was quoted by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about racial bias in a Coca-Cola case (12/15).

 

Dr. Bruce Siegal, research professor of health policy, was quoted by The Commercial Appeal about the director of FedEx helping to shorten the waiting time for medical patients at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (12/5).

Daniel Small, director of student financial assistance, was quoted by Dow Jones News Service about the University discounting tuition by 50 percent for the 2004-2005 academic school year for one of two twins (12/9).

Bernard Wood, Henry L. Luce Professor in Human Origins, was quoted by The Australian Magazine about the discovery of a Hobbit-sized relative of modern humans on an island in Indonesia (12/11).

 

Christopher Yukins, associate professor of government contracts law, was quoted by Legal Times about the U.S Air Force scandal regarding contracts with Boeing Co. (12/13).
