Directions to Campus

By Mass Transit

From Union Station or Bus Terminal :
  • If you're using the bus terminal, the first thing you should do is walk to Union Station (if you're going to get into a cab, you might as well take the cab all the way to GW.)
  • From Union Station, find the Metro station and take a Red Line train in the direction of "Shady Grove" or "Grosvenor."
  • Ride the Red Line three stops to the Metro Center station. Get off the train and go downstairs.
  • Get on either an Orange Line train that says "Vienna" or a Blue Line that reads "Franconia-Springfield" (or in some rare cases, "National Airport.")
  • On either of those trains, it's three stops to the Foggy Bottom Metro station, at which you will get off the train.

From Reagan National Airport :

  • Get to the National Airport Metro station - there are free shuttle buses if you need them, depending on the terminal you use.
  • Take the Blue Line train in the direction of "Addison Road."
  • Ride six stops on the Blue Line to the Foggy Bottom Metro station.

From BWI Airport :

  • BWI operates a free shuttle to the BWI Amtrak/MARC station most times of the day, 7 days a week.
  • MARC (commuter rail run by the state of Maryland) operates trains to Union Station Mon-Fri most times of day and tickets are $5.
  • If you're coming on Saturday, or when you're departing, Amtrak trains to and from Union Station are generally $12-13.
  • Once you're at Union Station, follow the Union Station directions.
  • If you're coming at very strange hours from BWI, there are some moderately expensive buses and taxis that can take you either to Washington or cheaply to the Amtrak station.

From Dulles Airport :

  • If you're travelling during peak hours Mon-Fri, Metro runs a shuttle bus to the West Falls Church Metro station. Find that, and from West Falls Church Metro station take an Orange Line train in the direction of "New Carrollton."
  • The Foggy Bottom - GWU station is seven stops away.
  • If you're not, be prepared to fork over a lot of money for a cab or shuttle to DC - you might even be better off renting a car.
  • (As an alternative, you could ask the cabdriver to take you to West Falls Church Metro Station, which should save you some money.)

From Foggy Bottom Metro Station :

  • I Street (also known as Eye Street) will be almost straight ahead (a little to the right) when coming out of the Metro Station.
  • The first street you will see will be 23rd Street.
  • Take I street straight for almost two blocks. Just before you get to 21st Street, you will find the Marvin Center, GW's landmark building. You are now in the center of campus.

By Auto

From the Northeast :

(New England, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or BWI Airport):

  • Take either the New Jersey Turnpike (NJ, NY, etc.) or I-95 southbound (from Philadelphia area) until they meet someplace in Delaware.
  • Use either I-95 or the loop I-895 (which rejoins I-95) to go under part of Baltimore. (People driving from BWI take I-195 West to I-95 South.) I-95 joins the Capital Beltway near College Park, MD. Continue on I-95 south until the exit for the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
  • (Alternately, people coming from Baltimore or BWI can simply take the B-W Parkway all the way to the Route 50 West exit)
  • At the junction of U.S. Route 50 will be a fork in the road - exit onto Route 50 West (signs will point to Washington), which becomes New York Avenue when entering the District.
  • Follow New York Avenue past North Capitol and the I-395 entrance, bearing right onto L Street NW. Follow L Street until it feeds onto Massachusetts Avenue at 11th Street.
  • Follow Massachusetts Avenue under the Thomas Circle Tunnel all the way to Scott Circle.
  • At Scott Circle, pass the entrance to 16th Street and make the fourth right turn, and head westbound on Rhode Island Avenue.
  • Two blocks later, Rhode Island Avenue ends, feeding onto M Street at Connecticut Avenue.
  • Continue on M Street, turning left on 21st Street. Follow 21st Street until H Street.
  • The Marvin Center is located at the intersection of 21st and H Streets, N.W. There is a parking garage in the building, and several metered parking spaces nearby.

From the North :

(York, Harrisburg, Penn State, etc.)

  • 1. Get onto I-83 South from either I-76 or US-22. Follow I-83 into Maryland, and exit at I-695 West/South, which meets I-95 South just south of Baltimore. From there, follow the directions above.

  • -or-

  • 2. From US-22 or I-76, get onto to U.S. Route 15 South into Maryland, which will feed into I-270 South in Fredrick. Follow I-270 South until the end, and follow the I-270 directions below under "Northwest."

From the Northwest/West :

(Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc.)

  • Follow I-76 East out of the Pittsburgh area until it meets with I-70.
  • Take I-70 East/South into Maryland all the way to Fredrick, where it meets with I-270.
  • Take I-270 South to the Capital Beltway (I-495).
  • Exit onto I-495 South/West and cross the American Legion Bridge into Virginia.
  • Very soon after the bridge will be an exit for the George Washington Memorial Parkway, with signs pointing to Washington. Take that exit and follow the GW Parkway until the sign for the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. Use the Bridge exit that says "Constitution Avenue."
  • Follow Constitution Avenue along Potomac Park for about six blocks to 20th Street.
  • Turn left on 20th and follow it up to H Street (GW Law School will be on your left), taking a left on H. The Marvin Center is on H Street at the corner of 21st, one block from the previous turn.

From the Southwest/West :

(Dulles Airport, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Knoxville, etc.)

  • Get to I-66 East, using I-81 North (from Western Virginia or Tennessee) or US-29 North (from Charlottesville).
  • I-66 feeds onto the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, from which you follow the directions under "Northwest/West" above.

From the South :

(Richmond, Norfolk, NC Triangle)

  • Get to I-95 North, using I-64 or I-85 if necessary.
  • At the Capital Beltway junction just south of Alexandria, Virginia, take I-395 North into Washington, crossing the 14th Street Bridge.
  • Stay straight on 14th Street northbound past the National Mall and Washington Monument all the way up to "I"(Eye) Street, where you will turn left.
  • Follow Eye Street westbound until it feeds onto Pennsylvania Avenue at 19th Street.
  • Take the first left turn you can, which should be 21st Street.
  • The Marvin Center is one block south of Pennsylvania Avenue on 21st.

From the East :

(Annapolis, Eastern Shore)

  • Follow US-50 East until you reach Washington, DC. Follow the Northeast directions from there.
